Eren describes his family as conservative and mentions that he often has disagreements with them. He takes photos at rap concerts and does graffiti. At rap performances, he snaps photos and even creates graffiti. His late-night return home is a result of these activities. At first, he gets into additional conflicts with his family and thinks they don’t get his interests. Especially when he started doing graffiti, his family didn’t understand his designs and got worried. Eren mentions that he left home several times and stayed in different places for a while, but eventually returned home after his family’s persistent calls. Although he wants to live on his own, he says that his family doesn’t approve of this idea. According to Eren, his family is often pressuring him to set a good example for his younger sister. His family still reminds him to pray, he asserts, but they aren’t as pushy as they once were.
Regarding his ongoing conflict with his family, he thinks his way of life does not fit theirs. “Like every Turkish man, not good, like every Turkish man’s son,” he responds when questioned about his connection with his father. He notes that his family does not approve of his actions since they are religious. Though his mother and his father have same opinions, they work out a means of communication. Eren says he doesn’t especially talk to his father about his activities and notes their talks just cover basic greetings like “good morning” and “good evening.” Eren’s family notes that he doesn’t say anything during fights. Eren says he shuts off communication as he feels misinterpreted.
He usually gets home late since he films during concerts; occasionally he leaves the house at three in the morning to do graffiti since the hours he needs to work are at night. Furthermore mentioned by him is the fact that his late arrival home results from the distance separating him from his family, which strains their bond. Eren claims that over the past three years, his life has altered dramatically; several turning points have brought about this transformation.
“Three years ago, I was a very well-liked child, by everyone. The reason could be my friends at the summer house. We have a summer house, and it’s a different environment where I might have developed interests by seeing my friends there. For example, all my tastes and interests changed, and I spread towards that direction. But, for instance, when I was thinking about something else, I had very extreme thoughts in that, too. I don’t have many proud memories. In every thought, whether right or wrong, I used to be extremely nationalistic. I was going to Ülkü Ocakları [a nationalist organization] like crazy. But I had very strange thoughts, like thinking that those who are not Turkish should die. This was just a year before my senior year in high school, meaning whatever I experienced, I experienced it extremely. My last thought was that, and I moved away from it. In high school, I was the school president, and in our school, every association tried to recruit members. They tried to pull me into their ideology. I was involved in very strange associations, and these are very bad memories for me. I’m sharing this for the first time.”
Eren points at another turning point in his life as follows:
“I used to be a typical high school student. I messaged a youngster who does rap on Instagram one day, a celebrity. He replied to me, and I immediately got involved in that scene. Actually, my entry into this environment started with that. I loved and listened to them. But even when I was listening to them at home, I would get reactions like, ‘Stop listening to that nonsense, turn it off.’ And suddenly… one morning, that guy picked me up from my house. I met those guys, and it works like this in that circle: If you’re hanging out at that guy’s house, he comes, this one comes. If you know someone from that scene, reaching someone else… there’s like two people between you. So, gradually, I started adding something on top of it. At first, I felt really insignificant. I was going to their places, sitting at their houses; one is a graffiti artist, one is an artist, another does something else. I felt really stupid. I wasn’t doing anything… that’s why I started thinking, maybe I should do music, or maybe graffiti.”
Eren thinks that the conflict stems from generational differences and emphasizes the impact of resistance to change and fear of uncertainty. Eren agrees that change is frightening and mentions that rapidly developing technology also occasionally makes him anxious. According to him, generational conflicts are normal; however, due to the fast pace of the current era, these changes are happening much more rapidly. Therefore, despite the resistance, change is inevitably taking place.
Eren believes that the concept of production should be considered from a global perspective. According to him, the existence of borders is unnecessary, and globalization should be approached with a sense of freedom. Eren positively evaluates the impact of social media in eliminating borders. Thanks to social media, it is easy to reach, communicate with, and follow the activities of people in different parts of the world.
